Buying a Hound

What to Ask Before You Buy

Good questions for any breeder, us included. A straight answer to each one tells you a lot about the dog and the people selling it.

  • How the parents hunt. Ask about the sire and dam: their lines, what they’ve been hunted on, and how they work a track.
  • Age and training. Ask where the dog is in its training and what it has already done in the field.
  • What it’s been run on. A dog started on one kind of game in one kind of country is worth asking about in detail if you hunt something else.
  • Health records. Ask what vaccinations and vet care the dog has had, and get the records.
  • Getting the dog home. Ask how pickup or transport works before you commit.
  • What happens next. Ask what the breeder recommends for the first weeks with a new dog.

When You Call, Tell Justin

  • What you hunt, and the country you hunt it in
  • Whether you want a pup or an older dog
  • How much hound experience you have
  • When you’re hoping to bring a dog home

See Them Work

Hounds on the Track

The best way to see what a hound is built for is to follow one. Our mountain lion hunts run behind the hounds, and the no-kill photo hunt gets you the chase and the treed cat without a tag. More about the kennel on the hounds page.
