White Pine, Nye, Lincoln & Eureka Counties · Management Area 13

Nevada Units 131–134

From the White Pine Range south through White River and Railroad valleys. We guide elk in 131 and 132, and mule deer and antelope in all four units.

The Unit

Big Valleys and Wilderness Ranges

Management Area 13 runs south from U.S. 50, between State Route 379 and the Fish Creek–Duckwater Road on the west and State Route 318 and U.S. 6 on the east, down to State Route 375. It takes in parts of White Pine, Eureka, Nye, and Lincoln counties.

NDOW notes that the area includes several large wilderness and wilderness study areas that overlap important wildlife habitat. The northern end usually gets more moisture than the south.

For deer, the White Pine Range is the center of it. NDOW says the upper White Pine Range has the highest deer densities through mid-October, and that deer start moving south out of 131 into 132 in October whatever the weather.

The Country

Where the Animals Are

From NDOW’s published hunt information and status reports for Area 13.

Mule deer

Through mid-October, NDOW says to concentrate on the upper elevations of the White Pine Range. Deer migrate from 131 into 132 in October, and by late October they can concentrate along Highway 6 near the White River junction and scatter along the Horse and Grant ranges. The southern ranges have small resident herds up high, mostly in wilderness, and hunting there improves later as deer move in from the north.

Winter deer

NDOW’s winter surveys find most deer on the Ellison Knobs, Douglas Hills, and Currant Hills, and to the south on Scofield Bench. Unit 134 has a very low deer density and usually isn’t surveyed.

Elk

NDOW manages the elk in 131 and 132 under the White Pine County Elk Management Plan and reports the herd stable and within objective. Elk have caused crop damage on farms in White River Valley in both units, and NDOW issued landowner cow tags around those properties.

Antelope

NDOW’s 2024 surveys found the largest antelope concentrations in Railroad Valley on or near the fields at Nyala, and in White River Valley. Sand Spring Valley in 132 had very few, and Garden and Coal valleys had low numbers. After two good weather years, NDOW says the herd has been rebounding quickly.

Getting Around

Access, Camp & Rules

Roads in

NDOW says access is good to all hunting areas, with no areas blocked by private land. There are many maintained roads plus smaller jeep trails that need four-wheel drive.
