Ely sits where U.S. 50 meets U.S. 93, north of us in Pioche. NDOW notes the town has most supplies and a full range of services, and the country around it holds several units we guide. For the town, lodging, and the full unit list, see our Ely & White Pine County page.
Elk East of Ely: Units 111–115
NDOW calls Unit 111 the biggest elk population in Area 11. It points to Duck Creek Basin and upper Cooper Canyon, and says bulls summer high in the Schell Creek Range and move into Duck Creek Basin and Cooper Canyon for the rut. In 114, summer elk densities are high in the upper Mount Moriah Wilderness. More on units 111–115.
Ward Mountain and South: Units 221–223
NDOW rates elk densities in 221 as good, with good numbers on Ward Mountain, and says 222 has higher elk densities than 221. For deer, early in the year most are in the high country of the Schell Creek and Egan ranges, in basins with reliable water. Be ready to hike high and pack animals out a long way. More on units 221–223.
Mule Deer in 115
NDOW rates deer density in 115 as fair, with much of the high country inside Great Basin National Park. The west side from Lincoln Canyon north to Strawberry Creek has good deer numbers, and most hunters want snow to push deer out of the park.
Mind the Park Line
There’s no hunting in Great Basin National Park, and it takes in much of the high country in Unit 115. Wilderness areas like the High Schell and Mount Moriah are closed to vehicles and wheeled game carts.
Roads
Highways and county roads run through these units, with two-tracks of every roughness. NDOW recommends high-clearance vehicles and extra spare tires, and warns that storms and snow can change access fast.
